Weekly Wrap-Up: A New Routine

On December 6, 2009, in Weekly Wrap-Up, by The Fat Geek

Time to change-up my routine again. Actually, if I am completely honest it is about getting back into a routine.

I mentioned at the beginning of this blog that I would be experimenting with what works and what doesn’t. What doesn’t is fall and winter. I can’t workout at home as my gym is in my garage and my garage is not connected to the house, nor is it heated. Moreover, it is really dark by the time I get home and not a very inviting place to work out. I know….excuses, excuses. Bottom line is that however I find the time….I need to find the time and get my lazy butt in the gym.

Finding a full hour during the work day has been hard. Although the gym is on the location and many different exercise programs are offered: spin classes, yoga, karate, etc – my work day is very hectic and filled with many meetings (much of which I have no control over – start/stop time and/or location). So the schedule is very difficult to keep. When I have to make a choice between work and workout you can guess what wins.

Now things have not been completely terrible. I have pretty much maintained my losses from the spring and summer. I for sure have gained back about 5 lbs. But, winter is coming, right!

Anywho, I tried to come up with a full body workout routine that wouldn’t take an erroneous amount of time (30 mins max). Here is the new routine:

  • Routine A (R-A)
    • Squats
    • Dips
    • Shoulder Press

2 sets of 5 (progressive warm-ups)
3 sets of 3-5 reps

  • Routine B (R-B)
    • Dead-lifts
    • Bicep Curls
    • Chin-ups

2 sets of 5 (progressive warm-ups)
3 sets of 3-5 reps

2-3 min rest between sets for full recovery

This is a two-week cycle:

    • Monday - R-A
    • Tuesday - Running for distance
    • Wednesday - R-B
    • Thursday - Running (sprints)
    • Friday - R-A
    • Monday - R-B
    • Tuesday - Running for distance
    • Wednesday - R-A
    • Thursday - Running (sprints)
    • Friday - R-B

So that is the plan. No excuses!

I need to create a plan. I always end up doing what I feel like doing. :/
