Week 23 – Took a Break

On September 27, 2009, in Weekly Wrap-Up, by The Fat Geek

So I am just one week away from the six month mark. I am feeling great, feeling healthy and my old clothes have now been packed firmly away. However, the last week and a half I needed to take a break. I was going through a bit of transition as my schedule was all mixed up. Moreover, I was really tired. So, I took a break for a few days.

Unfortunately, the few days lasted for 10 days! What happened? Well, as I said, I was really tired all the time. So, I thought I would stop for couple of days and see how I felt. In hindsight, now, I think it was the best thing for me to do. I did not expect it to last 10 days, I thought I would take the Wednesday to Sunday off and start up again that Monday. But, when the Monday rolled around I was still tired. Moreover, my schedule was all over the place and I couldn’t, on the fly, figure out how I would fit my workouts into what was now my new reality.

What I have come to realize is that: Yes, I was overdoing it! Sleep is so important to any good workout routine and I was not getting enough. Moreover, because my normal working hours were shifting because of the increased traffic with the start of school (i.e. I now leave the house later and get home later). I needed a new workout time. There was a bunch of other stuff that was effecting this too that I won’t get into. But suffice to say it was not as simple as just workout in the morning instead of in the evening.

So, my dilemma was that I had way more work (a lot of private ventures I was trying to mature), blogging commitments (very under appreciated in terms of time commitment), workouts to do and a shift in work hours. I really did need a week or so to get a feel for the other before I made any decisions on where my workouts fit in. Also, I think I needed the week to start and feel like working out again (did I mention I was tired, it was dropping on the priority scale). The other stuff (less my blogging about working out) all pays! A fact my wife is quick to point out!

So, having taken 10 days to get accustomed to my new routine and allow my body time to heal. I have decided that I will do my workouts during lunch. I use to do this all the time back in my 30′s (not that long ago, BTW), so I am familiar with this routine and what it means work-wise, exactly how much time you need to put aside for the shower, changing and eating lunch at your desk while you work. Quite confident this will work. This should allow me time to do my normal work and have the time to pursue the other stuff outside of my normal work hours, get my workouts done and still get some much needed and required sleep.

Now, I am lucky because my work has a full gym facility and I can do this. Frankly, if this was not an option I am quite sure that my workout routines would suffer drastically. Because, as I mentioned the other stuff pays money! I know, I know, many of you will talk about the payday of living longer, etc, etc. Not sure I would buy any of your arguments, but feel to try and leave a comment regarding your thoughts on the subject.

I’ll let you know next week how the first week went. I have a feeling that this will be my winter schedule and then in the spring I will go back to my old schedule.

    Hey there!
    Happy (almost) six-month mark!
I imagine this is a big week for you on a couple fronts, as I’ve been seeing all this stuff about Google Wave testers being recruited. (I am not one of them, which is a good thing, because I can barely comprehend what it is, although I did manage – I think – to explain the reference seeking feature I read about to a friend.)

Anywho, a little (hopefully encouraging) feedback:
    1. I think it’s important to note when you need a break, and give it to yourself. There’s nothing wrong with that, your body will forgive you, and you’ll come back even stronger when you resume. The important thing is to resume! So if you haven’t quite managed that yet…imagine me cheering you on to resume tomorrow! You can do it! Go fight go!

    2. I keep seeing that two things thin people have over those that aren’t are sleep + breakfast. Definitely get as much sleep as you can!
I’m not myself with anything less than seven hours…

    3. For several years, I was working full-time as the VP of a bank and then leaving directly from work to go to school full-time (getting my MBA at night). Needless to say, there wasn’t a lot of free time for working out.
However, I adopted the ‘do it at lunchtime’ plan. I remember our offices were right next to a minimum security prison from which people break out every other day, so I gave all my employees photocopies of my seven-mile route, would let them know I was headed out, and advised them to come look for me or call 911 (or both) if I wasn’t back before a certain time.
Minus the occasional awkwardness of being kind of sweaty (despite a shower) and overheated afterward, it worked out amazing, and I honestly wouldn’t have been able to fit the workout in otherwise.

So sounds like a good plan and best of luck and just keep keeping on!
Even if you miss two days or ten days or ten months…tomorrow is a new day where you can get right back on your schedule!

    Best,
    Vanessa

    Vanessa,

Thank you for the great words of encouragement! So far this week as been a great success. Worked out every day and now that I workout with others I notice that I have gotten myself in pretty darn good shape. (Pat on the back!)

    Ref your three points:
    1. You were dead on about taking a break and coming back really strong. This week I have been hitting it hard.
    2. I always have breakfast and normally get 7 hrs…normally.
    3. I am nowhere near that busy and now feel unworthy to have complained about being busy.
