Exactly when you workout can have a big impact on your weight loss program. It certainly should have a big impact on when and what you eat. I recently changed from an evening workout to mid-day workout to a morning workout. I use to only do a morning workout for the first 20 years of my life and only recently changed to the evening workout due to work constraints. I had to change to mid-day (or lunch-time) because of work and now find myself right back where I started….working out in the morning.
It seems that many fitness experts recommend that you indeed workout in the morning. Researchers have shown that people who workout in the morning tend to eat right all day long. It sets a mental note that you have worked hard today and you don’t want to blow it by over-eating, plus it has the added effect of getting your body into a fat-burning mode early in the day. Moreover, most people don’t skip the morning workout (that one was a surprise).
Morning workout
Do not eat until after your workout. That way you are working out on an empty stomach and burning maximum fat. Have some oatmeal or protein shake after your workout. Do not eat again until your 10 am snack.
Mid-Day workout
You want some food in your stomach but not too much to make you sluggish. If you workout at 3 pm or later have a big lunch so your not hungry at exercise time. If you workout at lunch time have a pre-workout snack and then eat lunch after your workout.
Evening workout
Either have a small snack prior to the workout and then eat supper or eat supper rest about an hour do your workout and then have a shake for the end of day meal.
Turns out that workout after supper is the least efficient fat-burning workout you can do. So…, I could be doing these morning workouts for some time as everything I have learned seems to to point to that being the most effective for fat-burning. I have read though that it is extremely important to have some good stretching in the morning as that is the time when the most injuries happen because your muscles are tight.
When do you workout? Which time do you prefer?

I love to work out before supper… my most difficult time for food is in the evening. All the hard work I just completed is still fresh in my mind when I decide if I want to eat crap or not. I think the important part is to go at the same time – that way I get to see my same buddies

My preferred workout time is early morning but having said that I am willing to do it in the evenings if life gets in the way.

Trying to work out more in the mornings but if I DO work out at night, definitely do it before I eat dinner. Though sometimes that leaves dinner a little later in the day that I would like. I try to stay up and active for three hours after dinner before I go to sleep.
