For those who were following my Twitter account you would know that we were trying to come up with a family tradition that we can do every year on New Year’s Day. We couldn’t really agree on anything until someone (me) mentioned we spend the day skiing. We all agreed and got up nice an early this morning so we could get a full day in.
I have to say this idea worked out way better then expected.
- It was snowing yesterday, last night and this morning…so we had nice fresh snow.
- There was hardly anybody there, they were all still sleeping it off from the night before…see picture above (actual line-up at 11:30)
- It was not cold at all (about -3 C), a really beautiful day for skiing.
- They opened up a few more trails today…variety is the spice of life.
- Finally, everybody was into making the day great to kick off our new tradition…so, everybody was very pleasant with each other.
I can hardly wait for next year. I could not believe how few people were on the slopes New Year’s Day. If you are a skier, I highly recommend talking it easy on the 31st and wake up New Year’s to enjoy one of the least packed, enjoyable days you will have on the slopes all winter.
We are heading back again tomorrow. I will post a pic of the lift line at 11:30 tomorrow and you can figure out by the “delta” (calculus term for change…did you miss the “Geek” part of the name?) and decide if an early night on New Year’s Eve is worth it or not.
I use to ski quite a bit when I was younger but only recently got back into it when my daughter wanted to take up snowboarding. She got some lessons last year and practiced on her Nintendo Wii with the We Ski and Snowboard
game. My wife also took lesson last year and practiced with the We Ski
game. Both actually found that the Nintendo Wii
helped them during the week prepare for the weekend of skiing. We have been at it for the last two years now and really enjoy it as great family activity.
Now, of course, it is our New Year’s Day Family Tradition. I think next year we may have to combine it with a trip on the 31st to a ski lodge around the area. Then get up in the morning and have our New Year’s ski day.
