The picture above is the gym at my client’s site where I now have a long-term contract. It is an excellent set-up and really it is hard to have any complaints about a free membership to a gym like that. I don’t have any complaints either, other than the inconvenience factor of working out at work.

Depending on where you are in the organization your day can be extremely busy. I have tried to start a workout at noon but that didn’t work. Being a consultant I don’t have any union mandated lunch hour. Many times, I had to forego my workout because of meetings that were taking place over lunch hour, or, meetings that just kept going right through lunch hour. Upper management don’t tend to look at lunch hour as a break time, you eat lunch when you get  a chance.

I also mentioned that during the spring and summer I used my gym at my house. This worked great and allowed me to conduct my work day and then come home and workout…easy, no fuss. But, because my gym in the unattached, unheated garage….it gets a little cold in the winter and is not a workable solution.

So, what is the plan. Well, basically I get up now at 6 am and drive to work to workout and shower and get at my desk for 8:30′ish. Today was my first day trying this and it worked out pretty good. But it requires a little bit of logistics. Making sure I have all my workout clothes, work clothes, different footwear (work shoes, sneakers and outside boots for walking to and from the vehicle) and shower gear. It may not sound like much but it is a lot to be lugging back and forth everyday and really does need some planning effort.

But, I am committed to making this work and finding a routine that I get comfortable with. This idea that there is always time for exercise that you hear constantly from trainers and fitness gurus is starting to piss me off. Because I can tell you the answer to that is, well, “yes” if you are really, really committed to finding time. The first guy (or girl) to come up with a workout machine that burns 400-500 calories in 5-10 mins will be a trillionaire! Because the two things that immediately need your time is your family and your work. You have to address their pressures on your time first. Then you can find time for you. That is the other thing that bugs me too. “You have to put you first.” Is that person married (if they are, are they the husband or wife in that marriage…cause it’s a big difference, trust me)? Do they have kids? What kind of job do they have? You can’t put you first. That is  a selfish, adolescent and naive statement by someone who’s personal life I would want to take a hard, hard look at before I accept that statement.

Anywho, got off on a little bit of tangent there. My workout for today and this week is gong to pretty similar to one I laid on the New Routine post, except I will be running most days and only doing 3 sets versus 5 sets to kick-start this week. Next week I will continue to run most days but will up the sets to 5. Then at week 3 I will follow that routine.

Do you work out at work? Love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

I have to agree with you. Family first, work sometimes second, workouts third or second if I’m lucky!

    Andrew,

Yeah, you are right….sometimes those workouts can slip into the second spot. I guess what I failed to mention in that post is that even though you sometimes can’t control getting workout times in. You can always (almost always) have control over your diet.
