Winter Weekend Activities

by The Fat Geek

Post image for Winter Weekend Activities

I think we will all agree it is much harder to keep active in the winter. It is so easy to creep into hibernation mode. Well, all I got to say is….Get out of the house!

A backyard rink will really make the winter go by fast and get you outside way more than you normally would. It’s like having a winter garden!

I love winter time. A few years ago I use to make a outdoor skating rink when the kids were smaller and would spend time with me on it. I loved that rink! Strange thing about your own outside rink, you find yourself actually looking forward to colder weather so that you can get good floods done and you are not really looking forward to the warmer March temperatures…although you get over that once your rink melts. See pic below: (click to make it larger)

The photo at the beginning of this post was a Tubing place we went to on Saturday. The photo actually doesn’t do the place justice. There was some huge slides there just above what you see in the pics. Moreover, it was a great workout too. Because you had to walk to get any higher then what is shown in the photo. I am here to say it was a good workout!

Sunday we went skiing again. It was another great day to go skiing. My advice to anyone that loves skiing is the the two must-ski days of the year for you, to avoid the crazy lines, is New Years Day and Super Bowl Sunday. I couldn’t believe how few people were at the ski hill today. I didn’t go there thinking about small crowds, but that was a really nice bonus.

Here is list of great winter activities to help pass the time and the calories you will burn doing each activity:

  • Skating – 476 calories per hour
  • Skiing Downhill – 408 calories per hour
  • Skiing Cross-Country – 544 calories per hour
  • Sledding (Tubbing) – 476 calories per hour (plus walking up the #^&* hill)
  • Snow Shoeing – 544 calories per hour
  • Snowmobiling – 244 calories per hour

So there you go…now, get outside and enjoy winter and stay active.

Exactly when you workout can have a big impact on your weight loss program. It certainly should have a big impact on when and what you eat. I recently changed from an evening workout to mid-day workout to a morning workout. I use to only do a morning workout for the first 20 years of [...]

So, the always dreaded first week of returning back to the gym is over. I have to say I am very, very sore. In fact, I could hardly walk on Thursday. Good thing I have a desk job. Although, that seemed to make it worse. I would sit for 2-3 hours and when I got [...]

Don’t Tell Me to Put Me First…or, There is Always Time to Workout

Thumbnail image for Don’t Tell Me to Put Me First…or, There is Always Time to Workout

The picture above is the gym at my client’s site where I now have a long-term contract. It is an excellent set-up and really it is hard to have any complaints about a free membership to a gym like that. I don’t have any complaints either, other than the inconvenience factor of working out at [...]
